Gestational diabetes mellitus

Gestational diabetes mellitus is defined as intolerance in glucose levels during pregnancy. The levels of insulin produced controls the blood sugar levels which may harm the baby and the mother. About 7%of the pregnancy cases are found to have diabetes. But this GDM can be prevented by adopting healthy habits before and after pregnancy.

Preventing gestational diabetes

Exercise-  A study says that pregnant women who had about 4 hours of physical exercise for a week had lowered their risk of gestational diabetes by about 70%.

Fiber intake-  Increased intake of fiber by about 10 grams per day has shown lowered risk of gestational diabetes by 26%.

Probiotics- By taking yogurt and other fermented food have shown reduced risks of getting gestational diabetes. But instead of probiotic food you can take foods like yogurt, dark chocolate, pickles, etc.,

Get checked- Getting an early diabetic check before the first trimester is always a best option to prevent its occurrence.

Diet- Its always best to have a healthy diet plans. Having more healthy vegetables, fruits, fats and proteins. Reduce the intake of sugars and grains.

As said prevention is better than cure it’s better to prepare your body before becoming pregnant by doing regular exercise and having a healthy diet with quality nutrition and adequate fiber and maintain a proper weight.
